Zverev and Tsitsipas move into Italian Open quarter-finals | Tennis News – Times of India

ROME: Alexander Zaverev and Stefanos Sitcipas advanced to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open on Thursday, raising the possibility of a clash in the last four between the pair.
World number three Zverev Foro defeated Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-6 (7/5) in the opening match at the center court of Italico to fight Christian Garin or Maran Silic in the last eight.
The Germans were embarrassed by the victory over the Australian de Minor after losing to teenager Carlos Alcaraz in the Madrid final on Sunday.
Xavier always complained about playing late into the night in Spain and he has been assigned two matches in the morning in the Italian capital.
“I prefer to play at 11:00 (0900 GMT) instead of 1:00 (2300 GMT). I think every player will say it. I think there will be something better in this,” Zavrev told reporters.
Meanwhile, Sitsipas was forced to work harder to win 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 against former Paris Masters winner Karen Khachanov.
The Russian Khachanov, whose best result came on the hard court, aptly took the first set against the lazy world number five Sitsipas.
After winning the Carlo Masters in Monte this year, the Greek rival bounced back in the second set and Khachanov’s fortunes were sealed with a two-game break in set three.
The last eight sitters will face either Philip Krajinovic or local hero Janik Sinar, the only Italian left in the men’s tournament after the departure of native Fabio Fognini on Wednesday night.
“I think relaxing a bit and trying to concentrate a little more has given me the victory today,” said Sitsipas.
“The last two matches weren’t easy but I can only take the good side.”
