Congress leader P Chidambaram today expressed confidence that his party would win the Goa Assembly elections next year and the next Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

Mr Chidambaram, who is in charge of the Congress’ Goa elections, was addressing party workers after inaugurating the state election campaign office in Panaji.

“Let me tell you a story from history … whoever wins Goa will win Delhi. We won Goa in 2007 … we won Delhi in 2009. referring to party workers) Goa won, but our legislators lost Goa,” he said. The Congress was defeated in the Lok Sabha elections of the year.

Mr Chidambaram said his team was moving forward with courage and confidence and would “win Goa in 2022 and Delhi in 2024”.

In the 2017 Goa Assembly elections, the Congress emerged as the single largest party, winning 17 seats in the 40-member House. However, at that time the BJP had formed alliances with some regional organizations and independent legislators to form the government.

The Congress currently has only four MLAs in the state.

Mr Chidambaram said, “History is ours … We are starting a happy day today and our office has been inaugurated by a valuable politician and former Chief Minister Pratap Singh Rane.”

Addressing the Congress workers, he said they should remember the “golden years” when Goa moved forward, improved and improved in areas like industry, schools, colleges and roads.

“We will bring back that golden age of Goa in 2022. I wish you to move forward with courage and confidence,” he told Congress workers.

Mr Chidambaram further said that “some political parties” would not colonize Goa.

He said, “Goa cannot be a political colony of any invader. Goa will be ruled by Goans. Goa is for Goans, Goans and Goans. Goa will be ruled by Goans.”

Former Goa Chief Minister Luisinho Faliro left the Congress last month to join the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress.

Mr Chidambaram said the Congress had presented the faces of its leaders before the state.

And in the days ahead, the party will bring in more young leaders, including women, Scheduled Tribes, the fishing community and Dalits, to rule Goa, he said.

Mr Chidambaram also said he would instruct party workers on how to transform electoral offices into “vibrant election offices”.

“Each block committee will have an office and the office of each block committee will act as a block election campaign office,” he said.

He added that they had spent enough time in planning and negotiating and now is the time to get out on the field and start working.

“There will be elections in 100 days from now. I don’t know the date of elections, but let me count 100 days from today. Every day we have to move forward, win more hearts and minds,” he said.

He said the Congress needs to win more votes and send a credible message to Goa and the country that the coastal state will see a Congress government in 2022.
