Will FYUP downplay the importance of PG program – Times of India

The Union Ministry of Education wants to start implementing 4 year undergraduate course (FYUP) in all the universities of the country, especially in the central universities, the focus for all practical purposes, may be shifted to the graduate program. Considering whether FYUP includes 4 years of college education with flexible entry and exit options, will postgraduate programs be reduced and short changes made? Yogesh Singh, vice-chancellor of Delhi University (UU), thinks that the implementation of FYUP in universities will strengthen the postgraduate program.

“FYUP will complement the PG program and add value as students who have completed four years of undergraduate education will be more inclined towards research and higher education. They will have the option to qualify for a one-year PG program (such as in European countries) and those who opt for a three-year undergraduate education will receive an honors degree and be eligible for a two-year PG program. What we are seeing is a total of 5 years of UG and PG education which can be followed in the new 4 + 1 format or the existing 3 + 2 format as part of a more student-centered approach towards higher education.

He added, “The goal is to break the rigidity of the existing curriculum and give students the opportunity to come out after three years or follow a research track in their final year of FYUP, moving on to a one-year master’s program. Not every student wants to be a researcher or a scientist, but if students decide to go for a Masters and later a PhD program, FYUP will transform into a PG program more seamlessly.

As per the Delhi University’s plan to implement FYUP from the 2022-23 academic year, Singh said the DU Academic Council has finalized the structure of FYUP in terms of semester and credit, while the Board of Studies will finalize course offerings. The former vice-chancellor of Delhi Technological University said, “In addition, students of UG and PG programs will choose to take courses from neighboring colleges / universities or choose their own MOOC, Coursera, AdX etc.” (DTU), where he recalls a large basket of course offers that allow engineering students to become minors in economics, design, AI or biotechnology, depending on their interests.

“In the coming years, PG programs will become more research-intensive and pave the way for quality PhDs in our country,” said Singh. Is being given where admission is supposed to start in the new academic year.

The FYUP and one-year PG program will help consolidate knowledge and give students the flexibility to choose from a myriad of courses, says Lingaraj Gandhi, vice-chancellor of Bangalore City University, who recently launched a multidimensional 4-year program and an integrated Masters program. -22 academic sessions. “The new initiative will enhance the quality of the PG program as FYUP will allow students to earn credit through UGC’s Academic Bank of Credit and engage in internships, projects and research in line with NEP 2020.

In addition to the flexible entry and exit options, they can earn up to 0% of the total credit through online courses that can be followed anytime and anywhere. Such options will ensure that students are not excluded from the education system because they have the freedom to choose and change the stream in their own institution but can also get credit from other institutions.

He added that FYUP and Masters programs will be more integrated than before as students’ skills and competencies are being added to the syllabus from the first year (of the UG program). “Preparation for the Masters program starts from the first year of postgraduate education where the focus is on core education, associate education (from sister branch) and open education which is called program discipline, discipline alternative and open elective in NEP language respectively. These will ensure that students who choose to take PG education are equipped with critical and analytical thinking skills and are able to enjoy the autonomy of lifelong and continuous learning.
