Why UPSC CSE question paper should be in regional language – Times of India

Recently, students, staff and others took to Twitter to raise their voices against allegations of imposing Hindi on non-Hindi speakers in the UPSC Civil Service Examination (CSE). According to the UPSC, candidates can write their answers in CSE Main in English or in any of the languages of Schedule VIII, except in the qualifying language paper-A and Paper-B, which they indicate at the time of filling. Their online application form for the Civil Service (Preliminary) Examination. Question papers, other than language paper literature, are set in Hindi and English for both primary and major.

Prasanna Kumar of AIR 100 at UPSC 2020 said, “Candidates have the flexibility to choose the medium of their choice to write the answer in the mother tongue, but the absence of regional language question papers in the prelims is a serious challenge for Hindi speaking students.” .

Congratulations!

You have successfully cast your vote

Many students lose the opportunity to clear the test in the first stage because they do not understand the entire question paper coming from a regional language background, which is quite discriminatory. There is no point in allowing candidates to write CSE Main in the language of their choice, when most deletion occurs after the prelim, which is conducted in English or Hindi. Government-run schools are facing more challenges than students like CBSE schools or urban English medium schools. Prospana, an MBBS graduate from JIPMER, had previously qualified at CSE in 2017. He did not join because he was not satisfied with the profile given on the basis of his rank. He picked up English to write his test.

In 2017, a total of 2271 candidates chose English and 297 candidates chose Indian as the medium of interview. In 2016, out of 2961 candidates who qualified for the personality test, 2582 students chose English and 379 candidates chose Indian language as the medium of interview.

Insignificant recipients

Regarding the small number of candidates choosing the Indian language for the interview round, Prasanna said the absence of study materials in the regional language is the biggest challenge in the preparation process. “Regardless of the region, most CSE examinees use study materials in English which may be the reason for choosing less interested Indian language for the interview session,” he said.

On the other hand, servicing officers believe that candidates should not see language as a barrier. “As part of the IAS Professional Course at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), future officers are trained in various subjects so that they are able to handle various assignments in the first 10 years of their employment. They are also taught regional languages according to the assigned states, so that they can better understand the administrative and cultural policies, ”said an official who passed the CSE in 201SE on condition of anonymity. . If future officers have no problem learning a new language as part of the training, ”the official added.
