To help students develop an understanding of basic mathematical and statistical tools and their applications in various fields including business, economics and social sciences, the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced Applied Mathematics as an elective for Class XI from the academic year 2020-21. The introduction of the new subject is for students who have chosen Basic Mathematics instead of the Standard Edition on the tenth grade board. In 2020, out of about 1 lakh students, about 1 lakh students appeared for Class X Basic Mathematics and about 1 lakh students appeared in the standard version of the question paper.

Achala Verma of PGT Mathematics at Birla Girls School in Pilani explained that there was less acceptance due to lack of awareness about the subject. “Last year my school had no acceptors for this subject as an elective. This year too, only a few students opted for it,” said Verma. “Most students choose subjects that offer a lucrative career opportunity. Therefore, students need to be informed about the future of applied mathematics,” said Verma.

Vivek Chowdhury, PGT, Maths, Faridabad-based school, said the issue was raised by the board when the Kovid-1 pandemic epidemic school was closed. “School closures have caused huge damage because both students and teachers were ignorant about the syllabus. Communicating with students and parents during virtual learning was another challenge. If there was detailed information, it might have helped us to spread awareness about the issue, ”said Chowdhury.

The challenge

Chowdhury said the absence of textbooks is a big challenge for both teachers and students. “Most of us rely on NCERT textbooks for board exams and other competitive exams. But no dedicated book for Applied Math has been published yet, ”said Chowdhury.

When contacted, a source at NCERT, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “We have often received questions from parents and students for applied math books. The books are not being published because the central government has not yet sent a proposal to publish the books. “The matter will be discussed at the forthcoming meeting and once approved by the NCERT government authorities, we will start publishing the book.”

Applied Mathematics includes Numerical Theory, Data Interpretation, Data Analysis, Commercial Mathematics, Set Theory, Relationships and Functionality, Algebra, Trigonometry, Fundamentals of Calculus, Logical Reasoning, Commercial Mathematics, Probability, Linear Programming, Time Analysis – Class XI-XII Curriculum information etc.
