However, with the introduction of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 NPST, some changes have been implemented, added the professor of education.
The way forward
Seema Dhawan, Professor, HNB Garhwal Central University, Srinagar, Uttarakhand, says that in future, CTET will be considered as an entrance test for candidates aspiring to become teachers. “Once the candidates’ skill set is measured through CTET, there is no need to conduct it again, ”he said.
JN Balia, head of the Department of Education Studies and Mass Communication and New Media at Central University of Jammu (CUJ), says that instead of CTET, NPST will now help school teachers ensure that they are up to date with the latest teaching methods. “Over the last few months, there have been discussions about the proper structure of NPST, about nine open houses,” he said.
The NEP divides school education into four sections, including primary, preparatory, secondary and secondary schools. According to the NPST, at each school level, teachers will also be divided into four categories, including beginners, skilled, expert and leadership. “In order to move from one level to another, teachers will be judged on different parameters,” Baliya said.
Still a concern
Dhawan said while NPST was a roadmap for school teachers to acquire skills in their chosen level of teaching, the concerns were not addressed.
“After CTET, candidates can be appointed as school teachers in any one of the four levels of the school depending on their skills,” he said. However, there is no roadmap for teachers to be promoted from one level of school to the next, he added. “It needs to be resolved as soon as possible,” Dhawan said.
Indicates the future
Aurora says that through a centralized entrance exam for the school teaching profession, the stigma attached to this field will be lifted. “Now, candidates do not have to worry that despite their efforts and skills increase, they may become unemployed or not get promotion due to faulty system. CTET is considered as a common entrance test in the field, everyone is on the same platform where only skills and abilities will help them move forward, ”he said.
Baliya added that campaigns are no longer a time-limited activity, but that the popularity and preference of qualified candidates for school education is increasing. “The move will benefit the overall education system,” he said.
The suggestions given in each open house are being collected and submitted to the ministry. “The final decision should be made and implemented from the next academic year,” he told Baliya
