Why only 19? SC asks govt to explain cap on women in NDA | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: After breaking the gender barrier and directing female candidates to enter the National Defense Academy (NDA), which was earlier allowed only for men, the Supreme Court has agreed to examine an application to allow women to compete with men for all seats. Without limiting the number of women enrolled.
A bench of Justices Sanjay Kisan Kaul and MM Sundresh sought a response from the Center on Tuesday when the court was informed that only 19 out of 400 seats were allotted to women candidates last year and the same number would be given to women candidates this year. Admission
The court said that limited seats were allotted to women candidates last year as there was no infrastructure on campus to meet the demand of women candidates. As the government has assured the court to gradually increase the acceptance of female candidates, the court sought an explanation from Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bahati who was present on behalf of the Center.
Bhatti said the issue of accepting women candidates was not related to infrastructural problems and it depended on the needs of the force. He agreed to submit an affidavit explaining in court. The court issued a three-week notice to the Center to explain the “restricted” entry of female candidates into the NDA.
