A schoolteacher in the US state of Texas has been arrested and charged with endangering a child while she locked her 13-year-old couvid-positive son in the trunk of her car for fear of contracting the disease, according to media reports Saturday.

On Jan. 3, Sarah Beam, 41, at a Harris County screening drive-through asking about her child’s COVID-19 test when she told an officer her son was locked in the boot of her car, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The officer – identified as Bevin Gordon, director of health services – told Beam that her son needed to be removed from the trunk before being tested for COVID-19.

Beam refuses and leaves the premises, after which Gordon warns the local police.

Gordon’s account has been verified by CCTV footage and Beam has even been caught opening the car’s boot to show his son.

Harris County District Court issued an arrest warrant Wednesday.

Beam teaches English in Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District, Northwest Houston. He has been placed on administrative leave.

KXAN News reported that Beam had taken her son for additional tests.

Police have not yet found Beam and her son, but they are believed to be safe.
