New Delhi: In an incident where it has been shown that Twitter can take back the blue verified badge from any verified account, irrespective of the status of the account holder, the social media platform has taken down the personal Twitter handle of the Vice President of India. Removed the blue badge from M Venkaiah Naidu, @MVenkaiahNaidu, on Saturday.
However, the official handle of the Vice President of India @VPSecretariat continues to bear the blue badge.
According to Twitter, a blue verified badge on Twitter lets people know that a public interest account is authentic. To receive the blue badge, your account must be authentic, noteworthy and active.
Its purpose is to encourage and maintain trust among users on the platform by verifying the identity of an account with Twitter for verification.
According to Twitter, the verification is part of the social media platform’s commitment to serve the public conversation by informing people about the authenticity of accounts, keeping the public interest in mind.
To be verified, an account must be remarkable, authentic, and active. The six types of notable accounts currently verified by Twitter include government companies, brands and non-profit organizations, news organizations and journalists, entertainment, sports and esports, activists, organizers and other influencers.
Twitter states that if an account changes its username (@handle) or if an account becomes inactive or incomplete or if the account owner is no longer there, it may, at any time and without notice, remove the blue verified badge and the Twitter account Verified status of . For which position they were initially verified and otherwise do not meet our criteria of verification since leaving such position.
Twitter may also remove the blue verified badge from accounts that are found to be in serious or repeated violations of the Twitter Terms, including intentionally or intentionally misleading people on Twitter by changing your display name or bio infringing, Tweets that result in immediate account suspension or repeated violations, including but not limited to: Hate Practices Policy, abusive behavior, glorification of violence policy, Civil Integrity Policy, Personal Information Policy, or Platform Manipulation and Spam Policy.
The blue verified badge was removed from the personal Twitter handle of the Vice President of India upon inaction, although several Twitterers have put up screenshots of the handle which continues to blue tick despite being inactive for over a year.
“Venkaiah Naidu’s personal account was inactive for six months and the blue badge is gone,” an official of the Vice President said.
Meanwhile, BJP Mumbai spokesperson Suresh Nakhua took to Twitter to question the removal of the blue badge from the Vice President’s Twitter handle and termed it an “attack on the Constitution of India”.
Nakhua tweeted today, “Why @Twitter @TwitterIndia removed the blue tick from the handle of Vice President of India Shri @MVenkaiahNaidu ji? This is an attack on the Constitution of India.”
