Kolkata: With the Indian rupee hitting its all-time low, the Trinamool Congress on Monday condemned the Center for alleged economic mismanagement and wondered whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi would take responsibility or blame the opposition-ruled states.
The TMC said the Union Finance Ministry had failed to address the problem and feared the country was heading for a deeper economic crisis.
The rupee extended its losses and fell 60 paise against the US dollar on Monday to close at a record low of 77.50 (temporary), under pressure from the strength of the American currency abroad and the inflow of endless foreign funds.
“Rupee is down all the time! Reasons: – Economic recession – Rising inflation – Expanding trade deficit – Continuous capital outflow PM @narendramodi, will you take responsibility for your failure or will you also blame the opposition states for it? “AITC tweeted.
TMC chief spokesperson Sukhendu Shekhar Roy said the country was heading for “the worst economic crisis since independence”.
“The country has not witnessed such a situation. It seems that the country is heading towards a deep economic crisis. The Union Finance Ministry is completely unaware of how the situation will be handled. As far as central government policies are concerned, there seems to be no respite in the near future, “he said.
