To expand the horizons for ITEP teachers – Times of India

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has announced the launch of the Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) from the 2021-22 academic year. While the program has been hailed as a stepping stone to improved teacher training, some inconsistencies have been noticed in the gazette notification regarding the course and are being discussed throughout the forum.

Required for the course

BJ Rao, Vice-Chancellor, University of Hyderabad (UoH), said, “The training that is being imparted under the traditional teacher education program is bad. In addition to being subject matter experts, teachers must understand the sensitivities of their students. If central universities adopt ITEP as part of the four-year undergraduate program (FYUP) framework, it will improve the quality of teacher training. ”

Pankaj Aurora, Professor of Education, Central Institute of Education (CIE) and Director, Institution of Lifelong Learning, Delhi University (DU), said, “ITEP seems to be a well-integrated program. ITEP students will learn how to improve learning processes for their chosen subjects in the classroom. ”

Taking action

Aurora said that according to NCTE, in the first academic year, ITEP will be launched as a pilot project in about 50 institutions across the country. “It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.

At UoH, a NEP committee is discussing the validity of adopting ITEP, as so far the institute has not offered a BEd program. “Negotiations are underway, but no conclusions have been reached yet,” Rao said.

Gazette notification problem

Aurora highlights some issues with the gazette notification published by NCTE for ITEP. “According to Section 2.2, each semester of ITEP will be 125 days long. For a five-day work week, it would be 25 weeks, while for a six-day week, it would be about 20 weeks. According to the University Grants Commission (UGC), each semester must be 14-15 weeks long. In this way, it will make a difference in the calendar of teacher education institutions and the rest of the university, ”he said.

According to another section, students will be admitted in any subject after the entrance examination, but they will be able to change their specialty within one month of joining. “Students are admitted to a specific subject under the program because of their interest / skills. It may not be a good idea to mix them with another group that has a different mentality, ”said Aurora.

Made carefully

Instead of focusing on textbook training, ITEP has been framed keeping in view all aspects of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, a NCTE source said. “The curriculum focuses on all the features, including basic literacy, local language and overall education,” the source said.

While formulating the program, NCTE left room for improvement and change. “The idea is to launch the program in pilot mode so that we can learn from all the problems that the institute faced in the first few years. Can be changed accordingly. Initially, we want to introduce ITEP in one or two central universities in each state to expand the horizons of education, ”the source said.
