tmc: Widespread violence mars civic polls in Tripura, oppn accuses BJP of rigging | India News – Times of India

Agartala: Amid allegations of massive electoral abuse by the BJP and attacks on 23 TMC and CPM candidates, Tripura’s 13 civic body recorded a bitter fight in the polls on Thursday, recording an initial turnout of 82% which could rise after the final count. Both the TMC and the CPM called the election a farce and demanded a re-run, pointing to the violence that injured 32 people across the state.
The younger brother of BJP MLA Ashish Kumar Saha and a 75-year-old man were on their way to a polling station in Agartala after being allegedly assaulted by saffron party workers.
CPM state secretary Jitendra Chowdhury has accused the police of rigging the polls and preventing voters from entering the booths.
TMC state convener Subal Bhowmik alleged that the police were inactive despite reports of troublemakers. He said BJP workers had “come from outside” to intimidate voters. “The government machinery has disobeyed the order of the Supreme Court to deploy adequate forces to ensure free and fair voting. We will go to the Supreme Court to demand fresh elections under the supervision of the court, “he said.
Opposing allegations of fraud and violence, the BJP cited “higher” voters as evidence of “spontaneous” participation than in previous civilian elections. “In some places, the TMC and the CPM have jointly conspired to humiliate the BJP and the government,” said party spokesperson Subrata Chakraborty. A total of 44 people have been arrested for the violence and more than 150 TMC and CPM cadres have been detained. CPM members gathered in front of West Agartala Police Station for a protest while TMC workers staged a sit-in in front of East Agartala Police Station.
