Arhus (Denmark): Having already reached the quarter-finals, the Indian men’s badminton team lost to Great China in the final group match of the Thomas Cup here on Thursday.
The Indians thus ended their group engagement in second place by beating China, placing them against Denmark in the last-eight stage on Friday.
Only Satviksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Sethi won the tie against China, beating He Ji Ting and Zhao Hao Dong 21-14, 21-14 in just w1 minutes.
The win by Rankireddy and Sethi boosted the confidence of the Indian team when fighter Kidambi Srikkanth started the day for India with a 12-21, 16-21 loss to Shi Yu Q in the 36th minute.
Sameer Verma fought hard against Lu Guang Ju but in the end lost his singles match 21-14, 9-21, 22-24 after one hour 23 minutes India trailed 1-2.
MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila’s other doubles pair went 2-2-2, 1-2-21 against Liu Cheng and Wang Yi Liu, before Kiran George defeated Li Shifeng 15-21, 17- in the minute. 21 singles matches.
The defeat against China was the first for the men’s team in the tournament.
They beat Tahiti by an equal margin on Tuesday before beating the Netherlands 5-0 on Sunday and qualified for the quarter-finals of the Thomas Cup for the first time since 2010.
The women’s team will play against Japan in the quarter-final match of the Uber Cup.
