Engineering colleges, which have started enrolling in BTech programs in regional languages from this academic year, are not getting encouraging response. For example, the college which has started admission for BTech in Computer Science in Hindi, has very few candidates. With a capacity of 120 seats, the college has received only 32 applicants. According to college sources, “Students are quite apprehensive about their future career prospects after completing BTech in Computer Science in a regional language.”

Erode Sengunthar Engineering College, which offers BTech in Mechanical Engineering in Tamil, also lacks applicants. “So far only 24 admissions have been confirmed. Another round of counseling is being conducted to fill the remaining seats, ”said V Venkatachalam, Principal.

Regarding the warm response to mother tongue engineering education, Venkatchalam said the main challenge is lack of awareness. “Most students are not aware of the availability of engineering education in regional languages for the reason that they are applying for admission. An awareness campaign is needed to promote engineering education. Gradually they will find out and come forward for admission, ”he added.
