The National Insurance Academy was originally established in Mumbai in 1980 by public sector insurance companies – General Insurance Corporation of India, The New India Assurance Company, Oriental Insurance Company, The National Insurance Company, The United Insurance Company and Insure India Insurance. Corporation of India at the initiative of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. The objective was to impart the necessary technical skills to the officers of insurance companies in India to meet the growing demand for insurance of all lines.



The academy moved to the 32-acre, green-enclosed campus in Balewari, Pune in 1990.

The opening up of the insurance industry to private and international insurance companies in 2000 saw the demand for technically competent executives with rich domain knowledge. As a result, the Post Graduate Diploma in Management course was started in 2010 with the admission of 120 students with the recognition of AICTE.


The PGDM program is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The program is also recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) as the equivalent of an MBA course.

The PGDM program, run by the academy, is a unique program that combines management knowledge with understanding the domain knowledge of different lines of insurance business. The curriculum combines conceptual inputs with art practice very well and prepares students for art from day one. It also offers students the opportunity to pursue leadership positions in insurance, technology and other BFSI companies. It provides great entrepreneurial opportunities in a variety of fields, including their startup ecosystem. The syllabus of the course enables students to successfully qualify for the examinations of Actuarial Papers of Insurance Institute of India (III), Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), UK, Institute of Actuaries, India and American Institute. For Chartered Property and Casual Underwriters (AICPU).

The academy attracts a large number of insurance professionals from public and private sector insurance companies in India and foreign insurance companies. The presence of these executives who are rich in domain knowledge and many years of work experience gives PGDM students an unparalleled opportunity to interact with them.





The Academy has close ties with insurance and related industries in India and abroad. Despite the obstacles posed by the epidemic, the academy can meet the needs of insurance companies and insurance domain knowledge companies. Students in the 2020-22 batch saw 100% placement, as in all previous years, despite the setbacks. The placement offer for the batch saw a maximum CTC of Rs 29.50 lakh.


Alumni of NIA have won acclaim not only in India but also abroad for their leadership intelligence and resilience in overcoming all obstacles and for moving fast on the corporate ladder.
