“We want to set up a central university in Ladakh. It is a happy coincidence that the bill is being brought on the second anniversary of the repeal of Article0.
The chief said the repeal of Article 0, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was not a slogan but a pledge.
“Under that commitment, we have given Ladakh the status of a union territory and are going to set up Sindh Central University at a cost of Rs 760 crore,” he said.
After brief discussion on the basis of the bill, Rajendra Agrawal, who was in the chair, announced the passage of the bill by voice vote.
According to the Bill’s Statement of Objects and Reasons, at present, there is no central university in Ladakh and so, to increase accessibility and quality of higher education, the government has decided to establish a new central university there and encourage higher education and research paths for people in the union territory.
It will also meet next year’s regional aspirations, it said.
According to the object statement, the bill seeks to amend the Central University Act, 200 amendments to establish a university in Ladakh called “Sindh Central University”.
The university will cover all areas of Ladakh, including Leda and Kargil.
The government said the university is expected to balance the region in the education sector and for Ladakh students to get access to quality higher education.
It said the university would help in intellectual development and better higher education and help in improving the quality of education.
