Speaking at the launch, the Prime Minister called on the Fellows to act as catalysts for grassroots social change through skill development efforts.
He also requested the District Collector and Academic Partner IIM (Indian Institutes of Management) to write a success story to help and transform fellows through this fellowship.
The Minister for Education and Skills Development and Entrepreneurship said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are moving towards a self-reliant India.
The chief emphasized that “massive changes in various sectors will create new skills and demand for more skilled professionals and thus direct skills mapping at the district level and efforts to develop skills accordingly.”
The Minister called on Fellows to work with global thinking and local approaches including integrating local languages into skills development efforts.
Talking about the National Education Policy 2020, he outlined the vision of creating a strong convergence between recent initiatives in this area, including key education and skills and the Academic Bank of Credit.
He called on IIMs to make fellows aware of the national education policy.
To strengthen the skills training delivery system in the country, the World Bank-assisted program, Skills Acquisition and Knowledge Awareness for Livelihood Promotion (SANKALP) was launched in January 2011 by the Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship.
SANKALP is involved with District Skills Committees (DSCs) to effectively reduce the disparity between the supply and demand of skilled manpower in the country, thereby creating decent opportunities for youth to work and earn.
The Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship (MGNF) program under SANKALP was designed to provide a cadre of professionals at the district level.
During the fieldwork (District Emerson), Fellows will work with DSC officers within the district on the skills challenges facing the district. Together with the DSC officials they will integrate the roadmap for district skill development planning and implementation.
MGNF is an opportunity for young women and men aged 21-30, who already possess some level of academic or professional skills to provide catalytic assistance to the district administration in the development of skills development programs.
