Telangana sets annual income limit for EWS quota at Rs 8L – Times of India

HYDERABAD: The economically weaker section (EWS) quota for primary recruitment and admission to educational institutions in Telangana has been fixed at Rs 8 lakh per annum.

As per the guidelines issued by the state government for 10 per cent reservation to EWS, only eligible persons from EWS are not covered under the scheme of reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes.

The total annual income limit for EWS reservations is below Rs. 8 lakhs. Income will include income from all sources such as salary, agriculture, business, occupation, etc. for the financial year prior to the year of application.

The guidelines state that .3..3 per cent of the initial recruitment in posts and services under the State Government prescribed for the EWS category will be allocated for women among them. The maximum age of direct appointment to a post will be increased to 5 years equal to EWS candidates SC, ST and BC candidates.

Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar on Tuesday issued a government order (GO) with joint guidelines for implementation of the EWS quota.

On January 21 this year, the Telangana government decided to save 10 per cent of EWS in the state.

In 2019, the Center announced a 10 per cent quota for EWS in higher education institutions, including primary recruitment in private institutions and services under the state.

The state government has issued the guidelines at a time when it is preparing to fill 50,000 vacancies in various departments and will start admitting professional courses including engineering, agriculture, pharmacy, MBA, MCA and LLB.

According to Geo, the Department of General Administration and the Department of Education will issue necessary amendments to the rules and guidelines separately following the criteria and guidelines laid down by the Government of India.

The facility of reservation under EWS can be availed after production of an income certificate issued by the Tehsildar. The office that issues the certificate will do the same even after carefully verifying all the relevant documents following the proper procedure, Geo reads.

Where any vacancy allotted for EWS in any recruitment year cannot be filled due to absence of suitable candidate for EWS, such vacancies shall not be borne as absent for the next recruitment year for that particular recruitment year.

EWS candidates will be exempted from the equivalent examination fee of SC / ST / BC candidates in case of direct recruitment.

The government has directed all higher education institutions in the state to increase the number of seats in each branch of the study to admit EWS candidates for all subsequent admission notices.

As a result of the 10 per cent reservation in EWS, the overall quota of various departments in the state has gone up to 60 per cent.

The Telangana Assembly has already passed a bill in 2017 to increase reservations for Muslims from four per cent to 12 per cent and for Scheduled Tribes (STs) from six per cent to 10 per cent.

The state had requested the Center to amend the constitution to relax the upper limit of 50 per cent for quotas in all sections prescribed by the Supreme Court. The Center has not yet responded to that request.
