NEW DELHI: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday wrote a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Tamil Nadu counterpart MK Stalin, stressing that the decision to set the table for the Republic Day parade in Delhi was taken in accordance with detailed guidelines and called for their participation. In the letter, Singh said 12 of the 29 proposals received from the states and union territories had been accepted. “I would like to draw your attention to the fact that there is a well-established system for selecting tables for participation in the Republic Day parade, according to which the Ministry of Defense invites proposals for the table from all the States / UTs and Union Ministries / Departments,” he said.
Singh said the table proposals received from various States / UTs and Union Ministries / Departments were evaluated in a series of meetings of an expert committee comprising eminent persons in the fields of art, culture, painting etc. “The expert committee examines the proposals. The basis of the theme, concept, design and visual effects before making a recommendation. The tableaux is shortlisted by the expert committee according to the time allotted for the tableaux for the overall duration of the parade,” he added.
Singh told Banerjee that the West Bengal tables were part of the 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2021 parades. He told Banerjee that the government has celebrated 2018 R-Day in honor of Subhash Chandra Bose and this year too the celebrations will start from January 23 on the occasion of Netaji’s 125th birth anniversary. Addressing Stalin, Singh said the table was considered by the TN government at the first three-point meeting.
