Supreme Court restrains AP police from coercive action against news channels in sedition case | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the punitive action against TV channels on which YSRCP rebel MP Krishnam Raju for airing critical views against the Jagan Reddy government to deal with the situation of Kovid in Andhra Pradesh Was charged with treason.
The Supreme Court barred the police from taking any punitive action against two Telugu news channels – TV5 and ABN Andhrajyoti, for alleged treason in showing ‘objectionable’ speeches by YSR rebel MP K Raghu Ram Krishna Raju.
The Supreme Court held that broadcasting of programs by TV channels and publication of ideas by the print media, no matter how critical of the government, cannot be traitorous.
The apex court said that it would also try to define treason in the context of such allegations being leveled against the media.

Justice DY Chandrachud said, “It is time for us to define the extent of treason.”
A special bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud sought reply within four weeks from the state government on the plea of ​​the channels, which are charged with various offenses including treasonable punishable offenses of treason.
A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and Justice S Ravindra Bhat also clarified that no punitive action will be taken against employees or employees of news channels in relation to the same FIR.
The court said, “We believe that the provisions of 124A (sedition) and 153 (promoting enmity between classes) of the IPC need to be interpreted, especially on the issue of freedom of press and expression.”
It was alleged that an FIR was registered against the channels for publishing Raju’s press statements.
The apex court had earlier granted bail to the MLA in the same case.
