PANAJI: More than 2,000 passengers on a cruise liner began testing for the Covid-19 on Sunday night after the state government refused to allow them to land in Goa after a positive test of crew members. The Cordelia Cruise Empress came from Mumbai.
“After testing the passengers for the Covid-19, some have tested positive,” said Health Minister Biswajit Rane. “We did not allow them to dock the ship. They have a contract with a private hospital for testing and we have asked them to examine all passengers before leaving the ship. ”
However, MPT and health officials said the ship was still on its way to Goa with 2,017 passengers tested positive for antigen by only one crew member (and no passengers). The results of the antigen need to be confirmed by an RT-PCR test.
About 500 samples were collected till 11.30 pm and the results of the first batch are expected by 1 am. “The tests will last all night,” pathologist Dr Eugene D’Souza, a consultant at Victor Hospital who is conducting the tests, told TOI.
“We have allowed the ship to berth, but everyone will be tested before they land. All passengers were given a double-vaccine. The ship’s doctor examined a crew member who had a fever for one day. The ship was kept out of port at the time of informing the authorities, ”said an MPT official.
