Annoyed by being confined to bed most of the time due to illness, the Delhi University professor couple hanged themselves in the Gobindpuri area of south-east Delhi on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Rakesh Kumar Jain, 74, and his wife Usha Rakesh Kumar Jain, 69, were found hanging with a steel pipe at their home in the Kalkaji extension in Gobindpuri, they said.
Two notes were found on a table where the couple mentioned that they were upset after going to bed after the accident and this led them to take extreme measures, a senior police officer said.
Police said a PCR call came to Gobindpuri police station around 3.45 pm and the caller informed them that his parents had committed suicide.
According to caller Ankita (47), a resident of Greater Kailash-1, her parents’ caretaker Ajit, a resident of Tughlaqabad, rang the bell at their door several times around 2.30 pm, but no one responded.
He rushed to the spot and informed Ankita. They broke the lock and entered the house and found his mother and father hanging on steel pipes, police officials said.
Police said the elderly couple had met with an accident while going to Gonda in UP last year. Although Rakesh Jain suffered a spinal cord injury, his wife had multiple fractures.
They are both bedridden. With the help of a caretaker, they started walking a bit, but were not satisfied, police said.
