Gurgaon: A group of parents has written a letter to the Haryana Chief Minister seeking his intervention to reopen schools closed since December 2 amid concerns over deteriorating air quality in Gurgaon. Many parents also gathered with their children at the Galleria Market on Tuesday to raise their voices against the school closure.

Parents have argued that schools have been closed for nearly two years due to the Kovid-19 epidemic, and now children’s education has been affected again in the name of the air pollution crisis in the NCR. They called on the Haryana government to immediately reopen the schools for the physical and mental well-being of their wards as well as for their educational progress.

Anu Kapoor, a resident of Sector 23 and a parent of two children studying in grades 6 and 12, said “the government needs to find a real solution to the pollution problem instead of closing schools”. “It’s been almost two years since the kids went to school and now the school is closed again due to pollution.” “In addition to education, the health of these children has been severely affected by the continuous closure of schools. We don’t understand how a child can be protected from pollution if the school is closed because they are breathing the same air in the house, “he asked.

Parents are also campaigning on social media. “When everything is slowly returning to normal, why should children be held responsible for system failures in tackling the pollution crisis, which is an annual issue in the NCR. Instead of enforcing rules to prevent pollution, children are told not to go to school, which is essential for their overall development, “said Jugnu Almeida, another parent.

Colonel Pratap Singh (Retd.), District President, Haryana Progressive Schools Conference, said, “Most of the students and parents are going to the school authorities to reopen the academic institutions. Learning for the overall development of a child is out of the book which can only happen in physical school. It is unfortunate that children are suffering because of the short-sightedness of the authorities. ”

When contacted, Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner Yash Gorg said, “The school closure order was issued by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) and a decision on reopening the schools will be taken in the end. Various school associations and stakeholders are contacting the commission which Will decide on the matter. ”
