New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in withdrawing the new rules in Lakshadweep, saying the rules seek to punish disagreements and weaken democracy at the grassroots level.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, he said that all this is being done by the new administrator Praful Khoda Patel under the guise of development and maintenance of law and order.
Gandhi told the Prime Minister, “I request you to intervene in this matter and ensure the withdrawal of the above orders. The people of Lakshadweep deserve a developmental vision that respects their way of life and their aspirations. Shows.”
Noting that the ancient natural beauty of Lakshadweep and its unique confluence of cultures has fascinated people for generations, he said that the patrons of its heritage want to protect the archipelago for generations to come.

Gandhi said that the effort of the administrator to reduce the ecological sanctity of the island is evident in the recently released draft Lakshadweep Development Authority Regulation.
The provisions of the regulation, he said, weaken safeguards related to land ownership, weaken environmental regulations for certain activities and severely limit the legal recourse available to affected individuals.
He said, “Livelihood security and sustainable development are being sacrificed for short-term occupational gains. The provisions in the draft Panchayat Regulation that disqualify members with more than two children are clearly anti-democracy.”
The Congress leader highlighted that the new administrator has proposed a change in the rules such as prevention of anti-social activities, Lakshadweep animal protection regulation and ban on sale of liquor and termed it as a deliberate attack on cultural and religious fabric .
