New Delhi: Under the ‘Quad Vaccine Cooperation’, India plans to increase production of the Covid-19 vaccine by about 1 billion doses by the end of next year.
Coordinating closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs The Ministry of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Science and Technology (DBT) said, “Discussions are underway between the quad partners (Australia, India, Japan and the US) as well as their agencies and organizations. Concerning strengthening vaccine production capacity under quad structure (MEA).
Asked about the deadline for ramping up vaccine production in the country, the department said in its written reply, “There is a proposal to increase production by about 1 billion doses by 2022.”
Asked by TOI about plans to increase vaccine production under the Quad Vaccine Cooperation, DBT said, “Considering India’s strength in vaccine production, the country has been identified for providing production assistance.” Quad partners will address funding and logistical demands for the production, collection and supply of safe and effective vaccines. ”
To accelerate the global Covid-19 response and collaborate on long-term global health protection, the Quad partners will work to use “partner tools and expertise” through a system of organizations, including the United States Development Finance Corporation (DFC), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan. Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC) and others.
“JICA is in talks with the Government of India to provide a discounted yen to expand the production of the Covid-19 vaccine. We are still in the process of preparing, and will inform Indian vaccine manufacturers later about the assistance, ”said Nagai Shinsuke, senior representative of JICA India.
