Washington: An informal group of four countries in the Indo-Pacific region of Australia, India, Japan and the United States fills an important gap that emerged in contemporary times, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has said.
“The Quad today fills a very important gap that has emerged in contemporary times, where there are global or regional requirements that cannot be filled by a single country. It cannot be filled even by a bilateral relationship, and which is multilateral. Not being addressed at the level, ”he told a group of Indian journalists as he concluded most of his meetings here on Friday.
Jaishankar, who is on an official visit to the US, is the first Indian cabinet minister to visit the country since Joe Biden became the US President on 20 January.
He stressed that India has clarity on the membership of the Quad, adding that he was personally involved in its progress over the past several years, in which he was India’s Foreign Secretary.
The Quad aims to strengthen rules-based arrangements in the strategically important Indo-Pacific amid China’s aggressive actions in the region.
“We are members of the quad. When we are members of something, we are very keen on it, otherwise, we will not be its members. We have clarity on the quad,” Jaishankar underlined.
The quad was one of the key issues discussed between Jaishankar and top officials of the Biden administration, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
“The Quad (and) still discusses maritime security and connectivity. In recent years it has started discussing technology issues, supply chain issues and vaccine production. There are maritime, safety quality issues. Therefore, the issues There is a complete set of, ”the minister said.
Without naming any country, Jaishankar said that there are many concerns that will have to be addressed by someone.
“Big countries can do a big part of it. It can add big relationships. But at the end of the day, most things work better if a group of countries sit together and say, well, we all have the same situation and equal interests, and why do we all sit down and resolve those sets of issues Don’t.
“So this is how we see the Quad. The Quad is an expression of the convergence of interests of many countries. It is in many ways a reflection of the contemporary nature of the world, where it is not a set, you know…. Let us call the Cold War its Have to be put behind. Only those who are trapped in the Cold War cannot understand the Quad, “he said.
