Punjab Assembly Election 2022 will be held on 20th February

Assembly elections in Punjab will be held on February 20, the Election Commission said today. The date has been changed from February 14 after political parties requested the Election Commission to factor in the Guru Rabidas Jayanti celebrations.

In a letter to the Election Commission, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi suggested postponing the Assembly elections for at least six days, as representatives of the Scheduled Caste community, comprising 32 per cent of Punjab’s population, told him that large numbers of people would go to Varanasi and Uttar Pradesh on February 10-16. In a statement today, the Election Commission said that several political parties, the Punjab government and other agencies have requested for postponement of the elections. “… they have also pointed out that a large number of fans started going to Varanasi about a week before the day of celebration and celebrating the election day on 14 February 2022 will deprive a large number of voters from voting,” the Election Commission said.

“After considering the new information arising from these representations, the input of the State Government and the Chief Electoral Officer, past priorities and all the information and circumstances in this regard, the Commission has now decided to reschedule the elections,” it said.

The BJP and its allies, including the Punjab Lok Congress led by former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh, had also requested the Election Commission to postpone the February 14 elections in Punjab.

In a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner on Sunday, Punjab BJP general secretary Subhash Sharma said, “The state has a significant population of followers of Guru Rabidas Ji, including the Scheduled Caste (SC) community which constitutes about 32 per cent of the country’s population. Punjab. They will go to Banaras in Uttar Pradesh to celebrate Guru Parva. So it will not be possible for them to participate in the voting process … “

Punjab Aam Aadmi Party chief Bhagwant Mann tweeted his party’s request to the Election Commission to postpone the polls within a week.
