New Delhi: Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri on Saturday said that the primary reason for playing for 19 years is that he has been selected for the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award.
Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, wrestler Ravi Kumar, para shooter Abani Lekhara, Indian football team captain Chhetri and Indian women’s cricket star Mitali Raj were among the 12 athletes who received the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award on Saturday.
“One of the primary reasons I won the Khel Ratna award was playing for 19 years. I want to thank everyone from the masseur, the physio and the doctors. It has made it possible, “he added in an official release from AIFF.
“I have to thank all my clubs, my teammates – both the club and the national team, the fans and the family. See – and I am very happy to share this award with each of you, “he added.
With 80 goals, Sunil is currently second only to Lionel Messi in the list of active footballers at the international level, with Cristiano Ronaldo leading by 115 goals. He has previously been awarded the Padma Shri and the Arjuna Award.
For the record, Sunil is the first Indian footballer to receive this award – the highest award for an Indian athlete.
Indian President Ram Nath Kobind on Saturday conferred the National Sports Awards on athletes.
Lovelina Borgohain (Boxing), Sreejesh PR (Hockey), Sumit Antil (Para Athletics), Promod Bhagat (Para Badminton), Manish Narwal (Para Shooting) and Manpreet Singh (Hockey) are the other athletes who have been awarded the prestigious award.
Krishna Nagar (Para Badminton) and Khel Ratna were supposed to be awarded but the event was missed after the sudden death of his mother.
The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award was given by an athlete for the most outstanding and outstanding performance in the field of sports during the previous four years. A special award ceremony is being held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports.
