Anil D Sahasrabuddhi, chairman of AICTE, said employers want to know more than the degree of a potential candidate before hiring. “Previously, offline internships introduced students to a company for personality and characteristics such as they work in a team, their time management, problem solving and soft skills and much more. Through online internships, this important step of determining the final place has got a big problem, ”he says.

Similarly, online interviews make it difficult for companies to gain additional insight into the soft skills of potential employees, such as their attitudes and communication skills. Sahasrabuddhi said, “All this was reduced in the final placement last year.”

Due to the epidemic, all sectors have been hit. With the collapse of business, the number of new hires in the automatic industry has decreased. Sahasrabuddhi added, “Recent conversations with various players from different sectors have shown that they want to be a more active part of the placement process this year as their business activities are slowly getting back on track.”

Low pay capacity

Regarding the number of students admitted to the management course in the 2020-2021 session, the chairman said that although AICTE has no official information, the number of admissions also seems to have been affected. “All sectors are suffering from the epidemic, even families have suffered huge losses in terms of personal income. At the same time, it seems that students have postponed their plans for higher education after the epidemic, ”Sahasrabude said.

Internship portal

Effective internships are one of the best ways to get a placement at the end of a professional course. Unfortunately, due to the epidemic, various colleges in Tier-II and third cities have not been able to provide their students with the best opportunities in this regard, Sahasrabude said. “AICTE has recently launched a portal to enable students to apply for them and get the most suitable internship for them. So far, the portal offers 116 million summer and semester internships. We hope it will also change the final placement number, ”he said.

Ways to be an entrepreneurBy not placing so much importance on placements, students should now be encouraged to take the entrepreneurial path, Sahasrabude said. “Last year taught us about the uncertainties of life. Students should now be encouraged and taught in ways that help them become entrepreneurs. Starting as job seekers, they should be able to add to the country’s employment landscape and become job providers, ”he added.

Data collected by AICTE shows that only 92,322 students in management courses graduated from AICTE-approved management colleges with jobs in 2020-21, compared to 119,546 students in the previous year. B-schools in the state, known for a strong service sector, also saw a decline in placements, including Maharashtra (20%), Karnataka (15%), Tamil Nadu (2 %%), Madhya Pradesh (22%) and Uttar Pradesh (2 %%). . The sharp decline in migration figures came down to a nine-year low in 2020, the data revealed.
