Reconstruction of the Detroit Pistons continues to take shape.
The Pistons injected the young roster with another dose of promise, picking Oklahoma State Guard Cade Cunningham with the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA draft.
This was Piston’s top overall peak for the first time since 19 1970. That year they chose Bob Lanier.
Piston general manager Troy Weaver tried to joke about his intentions before the draft, saying he was playing a number of possibilities, including a trade or other player at No. 1.
“We’re going to pick the pistons on the basis of recovery, longevity here and the fact that these players are playing a role in any game or they can take them in half the season or even the next season,” Weber told reporters the day before the draft.
