Sonipot / Gonda: A wrestler named Nisha Dahiya and her brother were shot dead by unknown assailants at an academy here on Wednesday, leaving the identity of the murdered woman confused as several reports mistaken her for a bronze-medalist at the Under-23 World Championships. Same name.
Mao was injured as his assailants opened fire on him and he was admitted to PGIMS Hospital in Rohtak, police said.
Sonipat Assistant Superintendent of Police Mayank Gupta confirmed the deaths of Dahiya and his brother Suraj.
The incident took place at the Sushil Kumar Wrestling Academy in Halalpur, Sonipat.
But there has been an uproar online as several reports have identified Dahiya as a world medalist, who was congratulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi this morning for his performance in Belgrade a few days ago.
The Wrestling Federation of India has shared a video to show the fast-growing wrestler that he is in Gonda for the national championship and is fined.
Witness Malik, the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist, is sitting next to him in the video.
“The girl who died is a newcomer from Halalpur village in Sonepat. She is also Nisha Dahiya but not the one who went to the U-23 World Championships,” said coach Randhir Malik, who traveled to Belgrade with the Indian women’s team.
“Nisha is safe. It’s fake news that she’s dead,” he added.
In Sonipat, police suspect an academy instructor may be behind the horrific incident.
Police said five to six rounds were fired, adding that an investigation was under way.
The body has been sent for autopsy.
