New Covid Case Alarm Rises at Shivsagar School – Times of India

GUWAHATI: Reports of new covid infections in several schools in Upper Assam’s Shivsagar district are ringing alarm bells, both rural and urban. The state government has made it compulsory for all employees, including pregnant women, to attend classes.

The identification of the Kovid case at Shivsagar School has been more worrying than that of the Guwahati school, Education Department sources said. As of Thursday, about 40 schoolchildren have been found to be cod positive in the district where the daily infection rate is well below the capital Guwahati.

On Monday, at Barpatra Dol Uchch Vidyalaya in Shivsagar, 15 students were found to be covid positive. At another school, one student tested positive on the same day. In the last five days, students and teachers of four schools in Shivsagar have contracted covid infection. Shivsagar Deputy Commissioner Megha Nidhi Dahal, however, told TOI that the identification of new cases was revealing the real picture of several pockets in the district. “Since students from different families come to a school, random testing will help us to identify covid cases where schools are located. Given the current situation, we plan to test Covid on all teachers this week, ”said Dahal, who was hopeful of isolating positive cases in schools before the outbreak spread to the community.

Several schools in Guwahati have reported a number of positive cases this month, though no such reports have been received in the city in the last two days. In the Nagaon district of central Assam, a junior college has recently been reported to have covid infection, while several schools in lower Assam are also at risk of contracting the virus.

Despite concerns among parents, senior government officials say there is no need to close all schools in any district of the state. B Kalyan Chakraborty, Principal Secretary, Department of Education, is monitoring the situation on campus by contacting DCs.

“There are about 7.5 million children in educational institutions across Assam. The number of Kovid cases is negligible compared to this huge enrollment. Most importantly, the schools where we have received covid cases in the last few days are non-symptomatic, “Chakraborty told TOI on Monday.
