The minister said MBBS first year students will also be able to learn about Maharshi Charak, a major contributor to Ayurveda, and Sushruta, known as the father of surgery in India. “MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) first year students will be given lectures on Hedgoarji, Upadhyayji, Swami Vivekanandaji, Ambedkarji and other great personalities.

The next academic session for MBBS students is expected to start later this year.

“The National Medical Council (NMC) has said that ethical values should be part of the foundation course in the first year (MBBS). So we thought of including these great personalities to build the character of the students.”

The minister said the states finalize the content of the foundation course.

Keshab Baliram Hedgewar, a surgeon, founded the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in Nagpur in 1925 based on the ideals of Hinduism. Deendayal Upadhyay was one of the prominent leaders of the BJP’s pioneer Indian Jana Sangh.

The minister said, “The first head of the RSS, Hedgewarji, Upadhyayji, Vivekanandaji and BR Ambedkarji were great dreamers and human beings.

He said Hedgewar had actively participated in India’s freedom struggle. “Deendayalji’s idea of annihilation was exemplary in helping the last man (most of the poor). Swami Vivekanandaji traveled far and wide to show his Indian vision. BR Ambedkar was born into a poor family but he drafted our constitution for us (MBBS) students. I have decided to teach about the inspirational life of these great personalities from the academic year (2021).

NMC fixes the syllabus of MBBS course. It sets the subject for each subject but the states’ education departments are empowered to prepare the foundation course content, Medical Brotherhood sources said.

Lectures on Hedgewar, Upadhyay and others may be the subject of medical ethics in foundation courses.

According to sources, lectures in foundation courses are usually given to students for one month after admission to MBBS.

In Madhya Pradesh, about 2,000 students are admitted to MBBS courses every year.
