New Delhi:

After 17,335 new cases were detected in 24 hours, Delhi’s daily covid case has increased by 15 per cent today. Nine people died in the national capital at the same time. On Wednesday, the city witnessed its biggest single-day spike in nearly eight months as 10,665 cases were reported in 24 hours.

Delhi’s positivity rate – the number of people tested positive for every 100 tests – has jumped to 17.73 per cent with the latest addition. 97,762 tests were performed in the last 24 hours.

The city has been making a tidal wave of lawsuits over the past few days and the wave is believed to be driven by the Omicron variant. According to experts, the variant is highly contagious.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain had predicted that Delhi would report more than 17,000 cases today. The positivity rate in Delhi is expected to rise to 17 per cent, Mr Jain said.

Hospital admissions, although not accompanied by an increase in the number of cases, the minister said, “Call it light, only experts can tell, but the number of hospital admissions is low.” However, the number of patients admitted to hospitals in Delhi has increased from 247 on January 1 to 1,390 today, an increase of 462 per cent in one week.

The data is reassuring as there are 30,000 active cases, but only 24 are on ventilators, the health minister said today, adding that if Delhi residents follow the Kovid protocol and adhere to the ban, the number of infections could be significantly reduced.

Yesterday, 15,097 coronavirus cases were registered in Delhi – the highest since May 8. Six related deaths were recorded at the same time.

A number of coveted restrictions have been imposed in the national capital as the wave continues. Curfew has been imposed on weekends from 10 pm tonight to 5 am on Monday. Only essential services will be allowed during these hours.
