Modi govt scraps missile, chopper tenders to push ‘Make in India’ | India News – Times of India

New Delhi: In line with pressure from the Narendra Modi government to promote ‘Make in India’, the defense ministry on Friday decided to withdraw tenders for a deal to buy short-range surface-to-air missiles and 14 helicopters.
The meeting, however, allowed the force to move forward with an agreement to buy air-to-ground missiles from France and to overhaul Russian helicopters, official sources told ANI.
The Department of Defense has begun reviewing import contracts under the Global Division, which are entirely sourced from foreign vendors.
A number of agreements have been put on and off the list with the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Defense to discuss whether it can be closed on behalf of Indian vendors or developers.
The list of foreclosures and repulsions includes very short range air defense systems, towed artillery guns, vertically launched surface-to-air missiles, shipless unmanned aerial systems, additional P-8I surveillance aircraft with MiG-29 fighter jets.
Agreements under foreign military sales routes, such as the General Purpose Machine Gun, are also on the list, and a missile deal is being verified.
The multi-billion dollar Kamov-226 helicopter deal with Russia is also on the list. Also on the list are Kamov-31 shipburn helicopters and club-class anti-ship missiles. Several classified projects are also on the list that will be taken up for discussion.
The move came after Prime Minister Modi held a review meeting with Defense Ministry officials, including then-Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat, where it was felt that strong measures needed to be taken to ensure the country moves firmly towards a self-reliant India. In the defense sector.
The Prime Minister is personally reviewing the progress of the Make in India initiative in the defense sector and from time to time has asked the officials of both the Ministry of Services and Defense to take further steps to promote Make in India in the defense sector.
