Ministry of Education forms National Steering Committee to formulate National Curriculum Framework – Times of India

New Delhi: The education ministry on Tuesday formed a 12-member national steering committee to develop the structure of the national curriculum. The committee will be chaired by former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan, who was also the chairman of the draft committee for the National Education Policy 2020.

Other members of the committee are Mahesh Chandra Pant, Govinda Prasad Sharma, Nazma Akhter, TV Katimani, Michelle Danino, Milind Kamble, Jagbir Singh, Manjul Vargab, MK Sridhar, Dhir Jhingran, Shankar Maruwada.

In line with NEP 2020’s vision, the committee will develop four national curriculum structures – the National Curriculum Framework for School Education, the National Curriculum for Child Care and Education, the National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education and the National Curriculum Framework for Adult Education.

A statement from the Ministry of Education said, “The committee will consider various aspects of school education, early childhood care and education (ECCE), teacher education and adult education, focusing on all the recommendations of NEP 2020 on these four areas for proposing curriculum reform.” .

The committee will discuss the position paper finalized by the National Focus Group on various issues in the four areas. The committee will collect input from the State Curriculum Framework received on the Tech Platform for the National Curriculum Framework.

“The structure of all national curricula will also reflect the impact of situations like the Covid-1 Pand epidemic in the area concerned in the future,” the statement said.

At the time of convening the meeting, the committee may invite subject matter experts, scholars, academics as required and deliberately and work out a plan of action to meet the time frame of the strategy for developing the national curriculum structure.


The committee will also finalize the structure of the national curriculum at meetings of the various stakeholders – State or Union Territories and the Executive Committee (EC) and General Assembly (GB) of the NCERT and the Central Education Advisory Board (CABE).

The term of the National Steering Committee shall be three years from the date of notification.

The notification states that the Director will assist the NCERT Steering Committee to complete its module and its terms of reference may be extended as required.
