“Design education is about researching targeted consumers, applying creativity to problem solving, creating prototypes and testing them as solutions. Designing is a horizontal field, for which students need to learn many skills. In addition to technical knowledge, a designer needs to know the psychology of the market. Multiple products, one designer works with the mass market. Tang, a global design educator, said creating functional products across different departments is a key aspect of design today.

One misconception about the design field is that it is only technology driven. “A designer’s job is to understand people’s emotions and transcend them into products that help solve a problem,” Tang shares.


Manvendra Shukul, CEO and co-founder of Game Art Creation Company Goals, says that a growing number of students today are realizing the need for design studies.

“Indian parents push their children towards engineering. But, with technology ahead and artificial intelligence (AI), an irreplaceable skill today is creativity. A designer needs to combine skills prepared for the future with empathy to develop winning strategies for consumers, ”Shukul said.

Yashu Maitreyi, a web designer thinks there is no right or wrong in design. “My parents pushed me to become an engineer, but web design is a passion. After a few years as an engineer, I took a part-time course to understand the basics of design and the skills I feel are important for personal and professional growth. ”


Maitreyi follows her passion and is happy with her decision to become a designer, as her current salary is competitive and she has the option to be professionally creative.

For a technology-based era, companies need to pay impressive salaries to undergraduate and postgraduate design students, which will make the field attractive. Design is thought to be the least likely occupation to be influenced by automation, which continues to evolve into a hybrid industry that is considered technological and creative.
