Lalu’s ‘derogatory’ comment on Congress leader has hurt self-respect of Dalits: Meira Kumar | India News – Times of India

PATNA: Senior Congress leader Meira Kumar on Monday slammed RJD president Lalu Prasad for making derogatory remarks against party leader Bhakta Charan Das, claiming it had hurt the self-esteem of the entire Dalit community.
Prasad on Sunday mocked Das, a Dalit leader and Bihar Congress in-charge, who had been targeting the RJD after the Prasad-led party fielded candidates in two by-elections in the state, without consulting its ally Congress.
“A respected leader has used offensive language against Bihar Congress in-charge Bhakta Charan Das, which has hurt the self-esteem of Bihar and the Dalit community in the country. It (language) qualifies as a crime under the SC / ST Act, ”Kumar, a former Lok Sabha speaker and a Dalit himself, said at the Patna airport.
He claimed that such remarks against the Congress leader had exposed the RJD mentality.
Kumar came to Patna to campaign for Congress candidates in Tarapur and Kusheshwar Asthan Assembly constituencies where by-elections will be held on October 30.
Prasad’s main rival, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD (U), has demanded the by-elections for two seats due to the death of its MLAs.
Prasad on Sunday questioned the usefulness of the Congress as an ally and was surprised that his party should have given up an assembly sub-seat in the state for the national party so that it could also lose its deposit.
The RJD has the largest number of MLAs in the 2J strong assembly and has been claiming that it will snatch two seats from the ruling NDA and create a “game” (uprising) in state politics.
Prasad, who returned to Patna after three years on Sunday, is expected to campaign for RJD candidates in the two seats.
He was last seen in September 2018, after which he returned to Ranchi to serve his sentence after his bail expired, allowing his eldest son Tej Pratap to attend the wedding and raising him several times to help him get medical care.
