Karnataka: Hindi teachers in 000,000 primary schools teach everything except language – Times of India

BENGALURU: Around 1,000,000 Hindi teachers employed in primary schools across the state are studying other subjects for which they have not been recruited. Reason: Hindi is not taught as a subject in classes 1 to 5 in state government schools.

Confirming the plight of Hindi primary school teachers, the Karnataka State Government Primary School Hindi Teachers Association said many of them have been stuck at their place of employment for 15-20 years, where they are also likely to retire.

In a letter to Primary and Secondary Education Minister BC Nagesh, the association has now demanded that Hindi teachers of primary schools be allowed to be posted as ordinary Kannada teachers wherever they can be found during the transfer season. Officers of the association told TOI that initially they were then hired as assistant teachers for primary and middle schools and taught Hindi in 6th and 6th classes.

“But we are in a ridiculous situation now. We were considered as Hindi teachers in primary schools in 2007 due to changes in cadre and recruitment rules. But Karnataka is not taught as a Hindi subject in 1st to 5th class, ”the association said in their letter. For this reason, students have been deprived of the opportunity to learn Hindi under the three language formula adopted by the state government even though there are 4,000 Hindi teachers in Hindi schools.

The association noted that teachers could not be transferred because there were no vacancies across the state as there were no such vacancies.

“We are teaching other subjects because we have completed PU, DEd (Diploma in Education) and TCH (Higher Teacher Certificate). But in the last 15-20 years we have not been replaced. Some of us are retiring to the same place where we were assigned, ”said Rama Murthy, general secretary of the association. These teachers have passed the state level language test for Hindi which makes them qualified to teach this subject.

“Should we have lower primary school (classes 1 to 5) or higher primary school (classes 6 and 7)? The government is not clear. There is no subject in lower primary school. In upper primary school, they are only hiring undergraduate primary teachers. The question is where do we work? Mourned a teacher.

He said, “We are currently teaching other environmental issues to the lower classes. In view of the depressing situation, our immediate concern is a shift, ”said Rama Murthy.

According to the association, they have been raising the issue with the department for the past few years, but to no avail. “Even though we have been given the responsibility of teaching Hindi, we are not getting the opportunity to do so. At least changing the post on other topics will give us a chance to move on. Otherwise, the state should be introduced as a subject of Hindi in line with the national education policy of three languages, ”said a teacher.
