Italian Open: Halep, Azarenka move into second round | Tennis News – Times of India

Former world number one Simona Halep and Victoria Azarenka have reached the second round of the Italian Open in Rome and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has been ruled out of the tournament due to an ankle injury.
Halep, the 2020 champion in Rome, lost 6-4 6-4 to France’s Allies Cornet in retaliation for his fourth-round loss at the Australian Open in January.
In a match that converted 10 break points between the two players, Halep led 5-1 in both sets and Cornet fought in both cases before finishing the Romanian task before sealing progress with Cornet’s survey forehand winner.
Azarenka met a known enemy of Swiss Victoriza Golubic, whom she defeated at the same stage of the Madrid Open late last month.
Although the match in Madrid was a close rivalry, this time Azarenka beat him 6-3 6-0 in the scoreline and ended the match in just 68 minutes.
Organizers have confirmed that Osaka has withdrawn due to a left ankle injury and his opponent Sara Soribes Tormo will now face the lucky loser Nuria Parizas Diaz.
Defending champion and top pick Iga Suitek and Madrid champion Ons Jabeur are in action on Tuesday.
