Investigates Digital Education as a Study Opportunity – Times of India

BERLIN: In the last two years, due to the Covid-19 epidemic and related lockdowns, lecturers have had to change and redesign their teaching methods in a short period of time.

Poor internet connectivity, difficulties in technical implementation and lack of personal exchange have made the transfer of knowledge and learning content more difficult.

However, a new study has found that digital education brings unexpected benefits and opportunities. The results of the study were published in the journal Psychology Rundschau.

In the study, Dr. Ann Gartner of the University of Dresden at Technice explained that digital teaching gives students as well as lecturers new, unprecedented opportunities and brings a whole new form of teaching and learning: “On the one hand, flexibility in time Because not only time but also costs can be saved, for example, by eliminating travel. Lecturers have more autonomy and they can decide for themselves how to manage their time and organize their seminars and lectures. In addition, reuse the recorded learning material Can go. ”

Students feel the same way: Digital learning allows them to learn at their own personal pace and repeat recorded lectures as many times as needed.

Yet, “face-to-face teaching and digital formatting should not play against each other. Digital learning should be seen as a complementary way to improve the quality of education, and face-to-face learning should not be important. It must be forgotten,” said Dr. Gartner.

Because even if online learning initially brings more benefits than expected, the lack of communication between lecturers and students leaves many gaps that cannot be “filled” online. An obvious drawback, for example, is the need for a stable Internet connection and the necessary technical equipment.

As digital education and its technological implementation were still unfamiliar to many, the workload increased accordingly, especially in the early days. Also, one of the major drawbacks is the difficulty of staying disciplined, attentive and motivated in front of your computer for a long time. For students, in particular, this requires significantly more self-discipline and organization than face-to-face courses.

For Dr. Gartner personally, the biggest problem is not knowing if he will be able to reach his students in his online course: Although in a slightly different form, as well as it has worked – even given a teaching prize at my digital seminar, which I was particularly pleased with – I still hope that I will soon be able to discuss topics together with students again in the seminar room and in the exciting lab. Run the experiment, ”explained the psychologist.

Dr. Gartner further believes that mixed learning (a combination of classroom and digital learning) could be a promising approach to teaching and learning in the future. In face-to-face teaching, for example, the focus may be more on interaction and exchange, while in digital forms of teaching and learning, the material can be worked on individually.

In the future, more people will want to learn and teach online, since everyone now has the opportunity to continue their education anytime and anywhere – be it on the street, in the waiting room, on the train or at home.
