International Olympiad qualifiers eligible for direct admission in IIT Kanpur – Times of India

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has recently announced an alternative route for admission to the institute. Students who qualify for the globally acclaimed Olympiad in various subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Informatics will be eligible to apply directly for admission to the Institute. However, the final decision on the admission of these students depends on the concerned department and the Senate of the Institute.

Change is needed

Nitin Saxena, chairman of UGARC (Undergraduate Academic Program Review Committee) at IIT Kanpur, said students who have qualified for the International Olympiad have already proved their eligibility and do not need additional checks for their IIT-JEE exams. “Every year, six Indian students represent the nation in the world-acclaimed Olympiad. They go through a rigorous preparation process to go through the various Olympiads held by the government.

Unfortunately, the majority decide to pursue their higher education at institutes abroad. “This framework has been put in place to try and retain this exceptional talent,” he added.

The right structure

Olympiad qualifying students can apply in their special subject section. “The exact structure of the acceptability or ineligibility of their candidature depends on the department concerned. Departments may decide to take a screening test – the process has not yet been decided. Based on their decision, the candidate’s application will be sent to the institute’s senate, which will make the final decision on the candidate’s application, ”Saxena added.

Saxena said the institute has just introduced an alternative system based on a major contract. “There is no guarantee of admission of these candidates. Numerous measures will be taken to ensure that only the most deserving candidates can enter the institute through this path, ”he added.

Exam preparation

Perth Haldar, Head of Department, (Chemistry) and Academic Head (FIITJEE Group) said there is currently minimal awareness about the Olympiad among students as well as parents. “We screen candidates who come to prepare for IIT-JEE and present the best for the Olympiads,” he said.

Since the Olympiad is a niche test, many students do not even consider the idea of trying it. “So far, the Olympiads have the prestige of qualifying for the exam, because it is not a mass level exam. Direct admission to some of the top engineering institutes in the country through Olympiads is still a foreign idea for many, ”Haldar added.

Parents also tend to confuse local-level Olympiads with government-run exams. Haldar added, “We have a long way to go before the concept of the Olympiad became well-known among students and parents.”

Similar ideas elsewhere

IIT Bombay 2011 introduced a similar concept for admission to the institute in 2018. . The institution has allotted six seats for the concerned students. However, the final admission depends on a screening process, after which the relevant department and, ultimately, the Senate of the Institute will decide. ”

Explaining the reason behind introducing this concept for math students, Mahajan said, “Usually, math students decide in advance that this will be their specialized field. With the Olympiad route, we give them the option to focus on other subjects without preparing for IIT-JEE exams .

Mahajan said that since 2001, few admissions have been made based on the Institute Olympiad route.
