New Delhi: India’s first virtual science lab for children – under the ‘CSIR Jigsaw’ program – which will connect students across the country with scientists, was launched on Monday.

Describing the virtual lab as a new beginning, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh said that it would not only take science to all departments of students in every corner of the country, it was also in line with national education. The new facility will greatly benefit the students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Naboday Vidyalaya and government schools and help them to retain their youth, the minister was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the ministry.

Singh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the scientist-student connectivity program at a CSIR society meeting last year – “Jigsaw” – and emphasized the importance of developing virtual labs.

Accordingly, CSIR has partnered with IIT Bombay to create a virtual lab platform under the ‘CSIR Jigassa’ program, which facilitates classroom learning with laboratory research for school children.

The target audience for the virtual lab is students in grades six through twelve (11-18 years old) who want to explore science using a variety of activities, the notification said.

Singh said the main goal of the virtual lab is to provide quality research exposure and innovative teaching to drive the students’ scientific curiosity through simulated exams, pedagogical content, videos, chat forums, animations, based on an online interactive medium. , Facility sharing, webinar etc.

He said the content would initially be available in English, but was also planned to be available in Hindi and other regional languages.

Singh said the virtual lab would provide a virtual tour of CSIR laboratories and familiarize students with the research infrastructure, which would otherwise be difficult to physically inspect considering safety standards. The platform will also have the option to interact with scientists and find their input.
