NEW DELHI: Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, veteran women’s cricketer Mitali Raj and history-making Paralympic stars have unveiled an unprecedented 12 athletes in India’s highest sports honor – Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna – by President Ram Nath on Saturday.
In a glittering ceremony held at the Durbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan here, the President acknowledged the country’s unique Olympic and Paralympic performance.
The event has become a private affair since the Kovid-19 epidemic went online last year.
The star attraction of the evening was Chopra, who received his Khel Ratna award amidst thunderous applause from selected celebrities present at the specially organized event.

Chopra was the first Khelaratna awardee to receive this honor.
Apart from the 23-year-old star, other recipients of Khel Ratna recognition are Olympic bronze-winning Indian men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh, veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, Olympic silver-medalist wrestler Ravi Dahiya and Olympic bronze-loving Loving. And Mitali.

Sunil Chhetri is the first footballer to be awarded the award, a recognition he deserves for keeping pace with Lionel Messi in scoring international goals.
Paralympic gold medalists Abani Lekhara (Shooting), Sumit Antil (Athletics), Promod Bhagat (Badminton), Krishna Nagar (Badminton), Manish Narwal (Shooting) were also awarded Khel Ratna.

India has received 35 Arjuna awards this year, including 12 Khel Ratnas Winning historic medals at the Olympics (7) and Paralympics (19) was a long list this year.

The event is traditionally held on August 29 every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
The Khel Ratna award carries a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh, a purse, a medal and an honor scroll.
The Arjuna Prize includes Rs 15 lakh, a bronze statue and an honor scroll.
Sports Minister Anurag Tagore and his predecessor Kiren Rijiju and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
