With the launch of four new Doppler Weather Radars (DWRs), the number of such radars in the country has risen to 33. There are plans to upgrade it to 90 to cover the entire country under the DWR network to give a better forecast of IMD. The four new radars launched on Friday are the C-band Polarymetric Doppler at Veravalli in Mumbai; X-band Polarymetric DWR at Ayanagar, New Delhi; X-band DWR in Pallikarnai, Chennai and fourth in Leh, UT, Ladakh.
Radar at Leh, India’s highest altitude, will provide important information by detecting lightning, heavy rainfall and snowfall, and thus assist in the observation of severe weather in the Ladakh region. The radar at Ayanagar in Delhi will monitor atmospheric phenomena up to a radial distance of 100 km around the site and enhance the IMD’s weather monitoring capability for the entire NCR region.
“The dual-polarization technology used in this radar will provide advanced precipitation monitoring and hydrometric classification by distinguishing between rain, snow and hail. It will also help in observation, nocasting and short-range forecasting,” the Meteorological Department said.
Launching the operation of these radars in virtual mode, Geology Minister Jitendra Singh said the government is committed to building IMD as a world-class organization for better service delivery, enabling the common man to make weather-wise and climate-smart decisions. .
The web-GIS-based Climate Hazard and Vulnerability Atlas of India for the thirteenth most dangerous weather-related event, launched on Friday, provides information on nine types of climate hazards. Wind hazards, extreme rainfall, thunderstorms, dust storms, hailstorms, fog, droughts, cyclones, and thunderstorms have normalized the number of days formed in terms of their spatial distribution or potential extreme values ​​and weakness indicators on the district scale.
Atlas also provides information on climate vulnerabilities at the district level for five types of hazards, namely, cold wave, heat wave, flood, thunderstorm and snowfall. Districts are classified as Extremely High, High, Medium and Low Vulnerability for each climate hazard. Atlas Pie provides charts that represent the percentage of districts and populations affected by catastrophic weather events in various vulnerability categories, ”the Meteorological Department said in a statement.
Dangers and vulnerabilities can be used as atlas reference points to issue impact-based forecasts for different weather hazards. It can also be used as a guide for socio-economic planning and disaster prevention and mitigation.
On the other hand, the Web-GIS application in Weather Services will enable forecasters, users and stockholders to create more interactive and informative products.
