Ajit K. Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee, called upon all HEIs in the state of Uttarakhand and the neighboring states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and the institutions within a 200 km radius of Roorkee in Chandigarh to join hands in creating and sharing knowledge. Formerly known as Roorkee College, the Institute was established in 1847 as the first engineering college in the British Empire. In November, 1949, it was upgraded from the former college to the first engineering university of independent India.
On September 21, 2001, the university was declared an Institute of National Importance, bypassing a bill in Parliament to change its status from Roorkee University to the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee.
