“Under the initiative, we plan to launch a partnership for consultants to develop their research capabilities to about five interested academic institutions in Uttarakhand. In another program, we will offer PhD fellowships to faculty members of local organizations within 200 kilometers from IIT Roorkee.
Under the IITR Spark program, we will offer 25 BTech / UG internship students each year. These students will receive a stipend of Rs 10,000 for two months, “said Arun Kumar, Chairperson, 175th Celebration Committee, IIT Roorkee.
Describing the research program as an incentive scheme, Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee, said, “The program is aimed at professionals who are unable to pursue a PhD due to lack of time and resources. We will provide incentives of Rs. 15,000 per month to these candidates. The institute is not slowing down the admission process or lowering the eligibility criteria. It’s just encouraging people to come forward to do a PhD. ”
Emphasizing the importance of the internship program, he said, “We launched the SPARC program four years ago where students from all over India were engaged in summer internships for two months. The program became very competitive and attracted huge applications. So we are now launching an internship program with 25 extra seats. ”
While most of the initiatives have been launched for candidates of institutions located in the neighboring states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, IIT Roorkee has also launched a scheme for school students from IIT Roorkee. Under this scheme, a trip will be arranged for school students who want to become mentors at IIT Roorkee.
“About 4-6 students from different schools will be selected on the basis of selection criteria and these students will be given a tour of the institute where they will be taken through various sessions on 3D printing lab, tinkering lab, super computer etc. These students will also be taken through various activity centers including Motorsports Club, Robotics Club, Drone Club. Finally, at the end of the session, students will have the opportunity to interact with the Director, Deputy Director and Dean, ”explained Manoranjan Parida, Deputy Director, IIT Roorkee.
Emphasizing the need for job creation, he added, “Active industry partnerships are always important because these industries use brilliant ideas and create laboratories for their commercialization.”
