IIMs may change admission process after CAT 2021 eligibility criteria change – Times of India

Following the revision of the Common Admission Test (CAT), 2021 Eligibility Criteria, some IIMs, including IIM Udaipur, are planning to make some changes in their admission policy to ensure a level playing field for all candidates.

Revised criteria

Considering the problems faced by some aspirants, the CAT Committee announced some exceptional changes in the eligibility criteria for CAT 2021 on 18 August.

According to the revised criteria, ‘Promotion / Pass’ candidates can enter the ‘Promotion or Pass’ option in the application form instead of the ‘Award Number’ certificate in any one of the last two years of the graduation program. This will allow the candidate to fill and submit the application form despite the minimum qualification criteria of 455% and 50% or equivalent CGPA requirement for reserved and general category candidates respectively.

The decision taken by the CAT committee, says the admission officer of IIM Udaipur, is to solve the problems faced by the students who are going to pass or finish their bachelor’s degree in 2020 and 2021. Every IIM should formulate their admission policy, ”said the admission officer of IIM Udaipur.

Why the admission policy should be changed, the admission officer of IIM Udaipur said while preparing the final merit, there is also a list of academic performance of the candidates in 10th, 12th and undergraduate classes. “In the absence of a score obtained by a candidate, it will be difficult for us to ensure equality between candidates without and without marks,” he added.

He added, “In order to formulate a new admission policy for better equality among the candidates including awarding marks and promotion or pass certificate, IIM Udaipur needs at least one or two months to come to a decision.”

Current policy

Currently, IIM Udaipur prepares final merit list based on CAT score (60%), personal appearance (15%) and profile (25%). Under the 25% component, the Institute assigns 9% weightage to the academic profile followed by work experience and diversity of 9% and 7%, respectively.

For academic profile, the following maximum weight – 2% for tenth grade, 2% for twelfth grade and 4%, graduate. Also, there is 1% material to complete CA / CS / ICWA.

There is no effect on admission

Despite slight changes in CAT qualifications, Binita Sahay, director of IIM Bodhgaya, said the latest changes would not have a significant impact on 2022 batch admissions.

“To our understanding, no institution has given pass or promotion certificate instead of the marks obtained by the students. Regardless of the formula followed, we have full respect for the numbers given by the university or institute. IIM Bodh Gaya will continue the same admission process, ”said Sahay.
