Haryana schools lack 40,000 teachers, 6,000 support staff – Times of India

Chandigarh: There is a shortage of about 40,000 teachers in about 14,000 schools run by the state government in the Haryana School Education Department. The schools also lack about 6,000 other support staff.

Haryana Education Minister Kanwar Pal on Tuesday presented the information before the state assembly in response to a question from Nayan Pal Rawat, an independent MLA from Faridabad’s Prithla assembly constituency.

According to the data, the department has 46,459 vacancies in various posts including 398 principals, 112 head teachers, 13,974 undergraduate teachers (PGTs), 20,467 trained graduate teachers (TGTs), 4,846 primary teachers (PRTs) and 6,66 others. There are support staff. Sweeper / watchman / peon. Rawat asked about the total number of secondary, high schools and other schools in the state and how many students, teachers and other staff have been recruited there.

In his reply, the Minister informed the House that out of 24,867 schools in the state, 14,473 are public and 10,394 are private. This includes 137 Culture Senior Secondary Schools. He said there are currently 53,68,539 students studying in schools across the state. Of these, 25,30,868 are in government schools and 28,37,671 are in private schools.


He further said that 1,37,895 posts from principal to fourth class staff have been sanctioned for schools in the state out of which 96,535 have been filled. He added that due to shortage of teachers, students would not have to suffer academically and vacancies would be filled quickly.

To a related question from Jharunda MLA Nirmal Rani (BJP) who wanted to know about the government’s efforts to promote co-education in the state, the minister replied that most government primary, middle, higher and higher secondary schools are co-educational. She said that currently out of 14,473 schools in the state, 12,664 are co-educational and only 1,809 are for single girls.
