Dehradun: In a cabinet meeting with the government late on Thursday, Uttarakhand has become the lowest medical education state in the country with a decision to reduce MBBS fees in government colleges, state government spokesman and Agriculture Minister Subodh Union said.

He added, “Previously, the minimum fee was charged from government medical students in Punjab, where a student had to pay Rs 1.50 lakh for the first year and then, it was increased by 15 per cent per annum for the rest of the time. Of course.” The government spokesperson further added that a state team has studied the fee structure in other states and found that Punjab is charging minimum amount in state medical colleges.

“After which, we decided to lower the rates further as it would be a big help for the people following the course,” the minister added.

Uttarakhand also offers the idea of submitting a “bond” to medical students.

According to which, after completing the course, they will have to work in the state for five years. The bond provision states that a doctor must work in a medical college in the first year. For the next two years, the doctor has to serve in a primary health center in a remote area of Uttarakhand and then, work for two years in a district hospital or a hospital in a remote area.

Bond depositors will have to pay Rs 50,000 per annum for MBBS.

Earlier, all medical colleges in Uttarakhand had a provision to issue student bonds and a fee of Rs 50,000 per annum was charged. However, during the time of Tribendra Singh Rawat, the rules were changed and the bond was given only to medical colleges located in the hills like Srinagar Medical College. However, with a change, the cabinet has now decided to give bond conditions to other medical colleges in the state such as Dun Medical College and Haldwani Medical College.
